This morning we left Bordeaux by train. A very comfortable 2 hour journey later, through rolling green countryside, fields filled with red poppies or sunflowers in full bloom and the sun shining, we arrived in Poitiers. And we only had a short wait for our local train connection, with just enough time for a quick coffee, before arriving at our home away from home for the next two weeks, in Montmorillon. I found our ‘petite maison’ on Airbnb and what a find it is. It’s beautiful. We are in a quiet ‘rue’, with the church gardens opposite and the best boulangerie in town (according to Rosie) a short 2 minute walk further down our rue. With 6 boulangeries to choose from in town, we’ll take her word for it. And our Maison is not so ‘petite’ either, since we have plenty of room to spread out and relax. And a spare bedroom and bathroom too, if anyone is up for a short French break?? We’ve even got a cellar, as back in WW1, this house was a bomb shelter, with room for 10 people to escape the horror. Rosie, the owner, met us at the train station and settled us in. We’ve arranged to have a drink with her and her husband in a few days time, which will be lovely. For today though, the suitcases are unpacked, the windows have been flung open, we are enjoying the church bells chiming and pinching ourselves on our good fortune to be here.
