Fields of flowers..

Anyone who knows me well, is well aware of my love of anything garden related. It’s too hot though in Brisbane for me to grow, with much success anyway, the plants that I love. Growing up in South Australia, meant that roses, daffodils, hyacinths, freesias, narcissis, pansies and violets were part of my life and I miss them. As I’ve gotten older, I miss them even more. My Mum was an avid gardener and always out pottering, when she could find time. Early in the morning, late in the evening or just for 5 minutes in the middle of the day if that’s all she could find, my memories of her in the garden are strong. My Dad, on the other hand, could never be trusted with a pair of secateurs, he would prune anything just in bud, back to a stick, much to Mum’s chagrin. So I have my Mum’s genes in this respect, the genes that mean I can happily lose hours of time potting, planting and planning. It’s my meditation.

When we bought our house in France, we both loved it. Jeff has always wanted a house on a river, so he was doubly happy. The aspect we have onto the water is beautiful, there is no doubt, but I was drawn, first and foremost, to the garden in between, as we have all the flowers from my younger years and more besides. This holiday is the first time we have been in our little house in Springtime and I couldn’t be happier, with everything blooming in profusion. I’ve had big bunches of roses and peonies in the kitchen, our bedroom and the sunroom, every day since we arrived, something I can only dream of in Brisbane. Or pay a lot of money for…

It seems to me that even the weeds over here are beautiful, with white Queen Anne’s Lace, red poppies, lavender, Rose of Spain and Rose Trémière (hollyhocks) growing on roadside verges, tiny crevices on footpaths and in open fields. It is spectacular and I’ve lost count of the number of times we’ve made a quick stop in the middle of nowhere, for yet another photo opportunity. I’m in gardener’s heaven!

Sweet peas are my most favorite flower in the world and we happened upon a field of them, growing wild. The perfume was glorious. If I could have run into the middle and lay down, I would have, but with ‘beaucoup d’abeilles’, I decided perhaps not…

Red poppies are everywhere. You could say that they just ‘pop’ up…

A variation on the poppy, this one has the most spectacular shade of gold and is prolific.

I’ve been told this is known as the  ‘Rose of Spain’ and it grows just about everywhere, in varying shades of pink.

Perhaps I’m turning into the Monty Don of Montmorillon? It’s got a good ring to it, anyway… 😃  (and, for those of you not horticulturally inclined, Monsieur Google is your friend)

  1. Looks gorgeous; of course you are in heaven! I just showed Lorraine and she was beside herself with all those flowers. Sorry I haven’t written much, but the old retiree had been busy with marking and other stuff at College of Law. We’ll cross over on weekend as I head to Melb in the Monday for revisit to Alice in Wonderland… and other stuff. B is puddling along with a few hiccups. I’ve decided to take the 5 year old ex breeding bitch Havanese. She is due to have her puppies any day now , then 6 or so weeks and on to me. I decided after I saw how happy he was when Winnie came for a visit. P She is quiet and gentle and will hopefully be a bit of company for him. Here she is with a belly full of babies. Her current name is Tramp(y).. I’m trying to go for Trixie or Tootsie. X

    1. Honestly, it is spectacular here at this time of year, there are flowers in abundance. I’m not surprised that you’ve decided to get another dog. It’ll be good for you, as well as Buster. Looking forward to meeting Trixie/Tootsie, she sounds delightful. Enjoy the ballet! xx

  2. Hi

That sounds beautiful with all those flowers around you. You would definitely be in “Karen Heaven” . I think you should have run into them and lay down amongst them all. All you need now are Sweet Peas!!

    1. Hi Charls, I thought of you when I saw them, you always remember how much I love them! Next time I’ll just have to have a bee keeper’s outfit in the car… 😉
